About

Published bi-annually, and housed at Bishop’s University in partnership with Laval University, ASSEMBLAGE is a bilingual, peer-reviewed open-access journal of videographic research.

French for “montage,” the term “assemblage” recognizes the affordances of the video essay to cut into and reorganize the abstract code of the digital image, and the desire to think critically of the media that furnish our tools.

While international in scope, ASSEMBLAGE pulls particular focus on the videographic study of Canadian cinema and on the contributions of Canadian researchers in the field of moving image and digital media studies. ASSEMBLAGE publishes video essays composed by scholars at every stage of their academic careers, including exemplary student contributions to the field.

ASSEMBLAGE features videographic work on all aspects of film, digital media, and moving image and sound studies. We welcome submissions that productively traverse the critical and creative potentials of the videographic mode across a range of styles and approaches.

ASSEMBLAGE welcomes contributions in English and French languages and in the languages of First Nations and diasporic communities. All videographic works and written materials will be made accessible to readers in both French and English.
